But what is oxidative stress and why does it matter?
Free radicals such as Superoxide anion (o2-) and other Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are continuously produced in our cells. Under normal physiological conditions, there is a balance between ROS and the endogenous antioxidants defenses of the body. However, certain conditions can disrupt the natural balance and lead to oxidative stress, which is defined as an imbalance between production of ROS, and their elimination by protective antioxidants. Increases in oxidants and/or decreases in antioxidants can disrupt this balance, and eventually damage the DNA, lipid membranes and proteins.
Every day, our body is exposed to numerous environmental factors which promote the free radicals production and generate cell damages. The daily exposure to smoking, alcohol, prolonged UV exposure, mental stress, unbalanced diets, or strenuous physical exercises, have weakened endogenous antioxidants capacities. Antioxidant defenses are responsible for maintaining low levels of oxygen metabolites in tissues and may play key roles in controlling or preventing these conditions. There are only 3 primary-antioxidants that prevent ROS and RNS cascade reactions: the SupoerOxidaase Dismutase (SOD) , Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx). These enzymes are called primary antioxidants. A depletion of primary antioxidant levels, associated with an accumulation of ROS and RNS, participates in the development of an oxidative stress and oxidative damages to lipids, proteins and DNA. Secondary antioxidants are externally provided from dietary sources, such as vitamins (Vitamins C and E), minerals (Se, Cu, Zn, Mn) carotenoids and flavonoids.
